Mission Style Oak Mirror

Mission oak styling was a reaction against the extravagance of Victorian furniture. It featured strong, simple lines inspired by the Shakers. The addition of arch and pyramid motifs made the pieces of the Stickley’s stand out for their time. This piece is made of White Oak recovered from a barn which once stood near Hamburg, VA. The wood was “quarter-sawn”, that is, cut with the annual rings of the tree perpendicular the long side. This gave the piece unusual strength, and also displayed the distinctive “rays” or “flaking” of white oak, creating a tiger skin effect. The adjustable side mount bolts are reproductions. $225
