Shaker Style Wall Clock
This Shaker Style Wall Clock was made to hang on a “Shaker peg” next to utilitarian items like chairs and the aforementioned brooms. The glass is approximately 140 years old, the wavy type of the period, recovered from an 1860’s house in Broadway, VA. In 1996 hurricane Fran felled a number of trees in Fort Valley, VA, including the cherry from which this clock case was made. The wood has been recycled into this wall clock. The Shakers were a celibate religious sect which had their heyday in the 1840’s. Their inventiveness far outweighed their numbers, never more than 4,000 persons, and they have bequeathed to us such treasures as the flat broom and circular saw. They are known by their furniture, which is designed around simple, crisp lines that nevertheless breathe sublime beauty. $400
